Why can’t I send messages on Telegram?

What’s stopping you depends on where it happens. Find what you’re seeing below, and you’ll know what it means and what to do next.

The short answer

If it fails in one group, it’s usually that group’s settings: slow mode, admin limits or a ban. If it fails with people who haven’t saved your number, your account is probably limited. If messages sit with a clock everywhere, it’s your connection.

If it only happens in one group

Group admins decide who can post and what they can post. They can turn messages off for members, block some kinds of content, or turn on slow mode, which makes members wait between messages, from a few seconds up to an hour.

If you were removed or banned, you’ll need an admin to let you back in. Read the group’s rules first, because many groups don’t allow ads.

If it happens with people you don’t know

Telegram limits accounts when their messages are reported as spam and a moderator agrees. A limited account can only message people who have saved its number, and reply to people who write first. Here’s what to do about it.

If it happens everywhere

First check your connection and update the app. If your messages still won’t send and Telegram says your account is frozen, it was restricted after reports from other users. You can still read your chats, and you can appeal from inside the app. Moderators review the appeal, and if the restriction was a mistake your account is unfrozen.

If you post in a lot of groups

Checking every group by hand gets old fast. teleFWD! shows which groups on your list won’t take your ad and why, such as no permission, admins only, banned, private or paid, so you can clear them out. Posting in lots of groups can get your account restricted, so read this first.

Questions

Why does Telegram say I can’t send messages to this group?

Usually the group’s admins have turned messages off for members or limited your account in that group. Check the group’s rules or ask an admin.

What does the timer in a Telegram group mean?

The group has slow mode on. Each member can send one message, then has to wait until the timer ends.

Why can I only message some people on Telegram?

Your account has probably been limited after spam reports. You can still message people who saved your number, and reply to anyone who writes first.

What does a frozen Telegram account mean?

Telegram restricted it after reports from other users. You can read your chats but can’t send messages or post. You can appeal from inside the app.

Posting ads in Telegram groups?

teleFWD! posts your ad to your groups on a schedule, from your own account, and shows you which groups won’t take it. New accounts can try it once for 3 days for $3, then it continues as Monthly ($15) unless you cancel.
